MICHAEL McLAUGHLIN, Director of Engineering

Michael McLaughlin brings over 30 years of experience in developing audio processing solutions for wireless communication products at Motorola.  His work in the development of digital speech coding technology has set current digital cellular industry standards in Japan, North America and Europe.

As Research Lab Manager, McLaughlin directed activities related to Wideband speech coding, acoustic echo cancellation, acoustic noise suppression and Voice Activity Detection.

McLaughlin’s accomplishments include being named Motorola’s Dan Noble Fellow and an IEEE Fellow for contributions to Speech Coding for Digital Cellular Standards.  He was the member of the team awarded the 1992 Radio Wave Contribution Prize from Japan’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications for the research and development of a high performance voice coding system.  He also received the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan Achievement Award.  He was Chair of the 2000 IEEE Workshop on Digital Speech Coding.

A former adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, McLaughlin holds a B.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Illinois in Chicago and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University.
